Open Development and aid flows: how to use aid data

Description

Every year over $130bn of aid flows in official assistance from donors to support development projects across the globe. Add in funding from charities and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and other sources, and you can see that international aid involves staggering sums of money, and supports thousands upon thousands of projects across the globe. Through the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) an increasing amount of open data on these aid flows is becoming available online in structured ways.

This hands-on session will explore open aid data from all angles. Following a series if lightening talks to introduce the aid landscape and IATI, we will break-off into groups led by experts to focus on:

– What the IATI open data standard is, and how you could use it (with members of the IATI Technical Advisory Group)
– Getting hold of the data that is already available (with the Aid Info team)
– Approaches to visualising and making aid data accessible (with the creators of the Open Aid API, openaid.nl and IATIExplorer)
– Building connections between aid data and other financial flows data (with experts on the Global Initiative on Fiscal Transparency), and
– Becoming an open organisation – addressing culture change as well as technology (with the OpenForChange team)

Choose the group you want to join for the main part of the session, or move between groups to get a full view of the potential and challenges of open aid data.
